The Lunar Coffee Washing Station was established in 2021 in the Rwenzori Mountains of Western Uganda. Lunar Coffee purchases the SL28 variety directly from local farmers. The station itself is located in Kirabaho, Kitswamba sub-county, Kasese District. Building on Long Miles Coffee's decade of experience processing coffees in Burundi, the station offers washed, honey, and natural processes.
This particular coffee comes from Rubirizi Hill. Almost all the coffee grown in this area is the SL28 variety, with a small amount of SL14 also present. The rich red volcanic soil further contributes to the quality of these coffees.
All coffees are picked at 18–24 Brix, then floated and hand-sorted to remove visual defects. The cherries are then placed in Jacky Bins and fermented for 60 hours, with the pH carefully maintained between 3.8–4.5. The coffee is then dried for 10–15 days, and is covered during the hottest part of the day to prevent fast drying or heat shocks.
